What is PRF

PRF, or platelet-rich fibrin, is the next generation treatment of platelet concentrate that can can be used for facial rejuvenation and for hair loss.

Aesthetically, PRF works by utilizing your natural platelets that instruct the body to create new collagen for tighter, smoother, and better-toned skin.

It is a fibrin matrix comprised of platelet cytokines, growth factors, and cells used to help promote skin rejuvenation, hair growth, and wound healing.

PRF uses the growth factors in your blood to help regenerate collagen and reverse the signs of aging. This concentrate is slower to release healing factors, than PRP, and therefore adds an even longer anti-aging effect. The injections also continue to work overtime, therefore promoting the generation of new collagen.

Benefits

How is PRF Done?

A small amount of blood is drawn and then placed in the PRF centrifuge. The PRF is spun at a lower speed necessary to keep white blood cells and stem cells together with the blood platelets and plasma. The PRF is then extracted and ready for injection.

To make you more comfortable, the provider uses very small needles for your injections and can also apply a topical numbing cream to reduce discomfort.

When will I see results?

After your treatment is complete, you may notice an improvement in your facial aesthetic right away. However, your results will continue to improve in the weeks after your treatment as new collagen forms in the treatment area.

3 to 6 PRF procedures, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, are recommended, with a maintenance treatment performed once a year after the initial treatment. Skin texture improvement can be observed within 3-6 months of treatment and will continue to improve after several months. Six months are required for complete collagen regeneration.

Complimentary Treatments

Patients may also choose to do a combination of hyaluronic acid filler mixed with PRF to get an even better result.

Using PRF injections in addition to dermal fillers will enhance the body’s natural healing effect by producing more collagen, giving you tighter, smoother, and better-toned skin. Fine lines and wrinkles will be reduced as well as a deceased appearance of scars.

Micro Needling with PRF may also be considered. Schedule a “Get to Know You” session with our provider, for a complimentary consultation, to see what would be best for you.

Treatment Steps

  1. Numbing Agent (optional) – If you are extremely sensitive or afraid of needles a numbing agent can be provided upon request.
  2. Blood draw – A few tubes of blood are drawn from the patient during a standard blood draw, much like you would get bloodwork done during your annual physical.
  3. Centrifuge – Once in the lab, the tubes are placed in a specialized centrifuge to separate a layer of cells that is particularly rich in platelets. This layer of cells is stripped and extracted in order to make your own PRF treatment solution.
  4. Injection – In the following step, your PRF is injected into your scalp at the level of your hair follicles, approximately every half inch across the entire area of thinning hair or bald spots. It takes about 30 minutes to complete the injection process.
  5. Repeat – It is usual for treatments to be administered once a month for three to four months. The majority of patients experience results in 4 to 6 months and choose to continue treatment 1 to 2 times a year after the primary treatment series in order to keep their hair growth after that time. In addition to PRF treatments, your doctor may prescribe topical or oral medication, such as finasteride, red light therapy, or minoxidil, to be used in tandem with them. According to recent research, hair growth has been shown to improve more quickly and significantly when both PRF and pharmacological treatment are taken in conjunction.

Safety

Because the treatments use a patient’s own blood, PRF treatments are safe and can be administered alone or in conjunction with other procedures. It’s considered safe for most people who are in overall good health.

Since the treatment is based on your own cells there is minimal possibility of bad responses occurring during the procedure. There is very little to no discomfort to be experienced during the process itself.
