Learn About Microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?

A microdermabrasion facial is a form of advanced exfoliation. It uses a special applicator with an abrasive surface to gently reduce the thick outer layer of the skin. This treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that leaves skin supple and radiant.

Diamond vs. Crystal Tip

In the mid 1990s the tool of choice in the 1990s was crystal microdermabrasion. However, the newer diamond tipped wand has been shown to be safer and more precise.

A good way to compare  the two tools is to think of “sandblasting,” which is the crystal method and “sandpapering,” which is the diamond method.

Crystal Microderm

The tool for crystal microdermabrasion facials use a special hand-held device that simultaneously blasts aluminum oxide crystals onto the skin, vacuums up dirt, dead skin cells, and used crystals. This abrasive (ablative) technique was considered an excellent technique for deep exfoliation and stripping of the top skin layer. However, due to the irregular shape of the crystals, they can actually be too abrasive and leave the skin inflamed.

For patients with skin conditions that stem from inflammation, like rosacea, crystal microdermabrasion can worsen the condition and appearance of skin since this treatment is dependent on the machine’s application of the proper force of crystal flow and suction. Therefore, crystal microdermabrasion can be a less reliable form of microdermabrasion. Another downside to this treatment is that the complete removal of crystal particles is challenging, resulting in some residue remaining on the skin.

Diamond microdermabrasion

This tools involves the use of a diamond-tipped wand is used to slough away top level skin (an abrasive procedure). This tool vacuums dirt and dead skin cells and its the nature of the diamond based tool to not leave any diamond based particles on the skin.

Rather than placing the results in the hands of a machine, the diamond tipped tool relies on the skill of the operator to apply manual pressure, giving the technician much more direct control over the entire process.

Due to the precise nature of this tool, especially when compared to crystal wand, this treatment provides better accuracy for hard-to-reach places. For example, locations closer to the eyes and mouth (and there is no risk of stray particles getting in your eye or being ingested through your nose or mouth). This is ,

Preparation for Microdermabrasion

Your provider may tell you to avoid sun exposure, tanning creams, and waxing for about a week before treatment.

You should stop using exfoliating creams and masks about three (3) days prior to treatment.

The Treatment

Microdermabrasion facial is an in-office procedure that usually takes about an hour, typically performed by a licensed skin care professional.

Anesthesia is not necessary to use and neither is a numbing agent for microdermabrasion.

Your provider will use a handheld device to gently remove the outer layer of skin in the targeted areas.

After Care

At the end of your treatment moisturizer and sunscreen will be applied. Remember the first 24 hours are the most important to ensure the best possible results. Some key points include:

  • Keep your skin cool and calm (minimize intense exercise)
  • Stay hydrated. Drink at least 2-4 glasses of water per day.
  • Don’t pick at your skin.
  • Start a gentle skin care routine.
